Beijing said Friday it has lodged a “serious protest” with Italy and the EU over Taiwan, urging the European bloc to “honor the one-China principle with real actions.”

The protest comes as Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's second-highest official, visits Italy for the second Ventotene European Conference for Freedom and Democracy.

Hsiao is accompanied by Taiwan’s top diplomat, Lin Chia-lung, for the three-day event, which runs until Saturday on the Italian island of Ventotene.
