Iraqi Ambassador to Russia, Abdul Karim Hashim Mustafa, affirmed on Sunday that Iraqi-Russian relations are historic and offer broad prospects for cooperation. He noted that efforts are underway to convene the Joint Iraqi-Russian Committee in Moscow this December, emphasizing that energy specifically oil, gas, and electricity tops the list of cooperation priorities between the two countries.

Mustafa told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): that "Iraqi-Russian relations are not new; diplomatic ties—dating back to the former Soviet Union and subsequently the Russian Federation—go back to 1945." He noted that the relationship saw the signing of a friendship and cooperation agreement and high-level visits during the Soviet era, particularly in the 1970s.

He added that "economic relations have always been at an advanced level, and Russian companies were among the first to operate in the Iraqi oil sector during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s," noting that "relations between the two countries are long-standing, multifaceted, and of a high level."
