On 13 January 2021, a webinar titled “The Aftermath of the 2020 Karabakh War: Regional and Global Implications” was organized by AVİM.

At the webinar moderated by AVİM Senior Analyst Dr. Turgut Kerem Tuncel; Luke Coffey (Director of the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy at the Heritage Foundation), Mehmet Oğuzhan Tulun (AVİM Analyst), Glen Howard (President of the Jamestown Foundation), LTG (Ret.) Ben Hodges (Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis), and Amb. (Ret.) Alev Kılıç (AVİM Director) discussed the implications of the 2020 Karabakh War particularly for the regional  and global  third  actors, as well as the implications of the emerging situation in the South Caucasus on the Wider Black Sea Region and beyond.

An interesting discussion at the webinar was on the interconnectedness of seemingly unrelated issues in and around the Wider Black Sea region and the imperative to develop a comprehensive and analytical understanding on regional and global developments. Another engaging discussion was the opportunities coming into view following the 2020 Karabakh War with respect to prospects of deeper cooperation and good relations between Turkey and the US.

In addition to these, AVİM Advisor Amb. (Ret.) Yiğit Alpogan, while commenting on the discussions, underlined the importance of the second paragraph of the ninth article of the Statement signed by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and President of Russia Vladimir Putin  on 10 November to end the hostilities, which refers to the construction of new transport communications linking the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic with the western regions of Azerbaijan. Ambassador Alpogan stressed that these new transport lines, including the railroad, that will enable Turkey’s access to the Caspian Sea and Central Asia will be of utmost strategic significance.

The webinar was finalized by a Q&A session.
