Statements by Armenian authorities about the importance of maintaining and developing ties with Russia do not correspond to the practical steps being taken by the country’s leadership toward European Union membership, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“We hear statements by Armenian officials about the importance of Moscow as a partner, as well as Yerevan’s intention to preserve and develop relations with Russia. Unfortunately, however, we do not see those words matching the actions and steps of Armenia’s leadership, which has clearly declared its aspiration to join the European Union,” Zakharova said.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a briefing with reporters last week that he would participate in a session of the Eurasian Economic Union’s Intergovernmental Council.
