The unrest marks a sharp escalation after nine months of largely peaceful marches

President Aleksandar Vučić is leaning on his most aggressive supporters to put down dissent, as Serbia’s main cities endure more than a week of violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Visiting a vandalised office of his nationalist Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) on Monday, Vučić vowed: “We will free the country from terror and evil. We will act faster, stronger. We will not ask anyone abroad for help or permission.”
