It is a pleasure to present our Annual Report that provides a brief overview of the works and activities of the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) during the year 2025.
The year 2025 has been a time frame heralding that the international order established following the Second World War has approached its demise, yielding way to increased push of regional powers, showing concrete signs that a new multipolar order is emerging.
The cracks in the established order and the throes of the coming new order have been accompanied with heavy turbulences on a global scale as the rules of international law started to be violated with impunity and use of force to promote interests became widespread.
Türkiye, the nexus of the East and the West, as well as at the crossroads of the North and the South, while accomplishing to stay out of the surrounding ring of fire, has come to the fore, making solid efforts to resolve the conflicts peacefully through diplomatic negotiations. The unique geography of Anatolia, connecting continents, particularly in view of the growing significance of the “middle corridor” and the complementary addition of the “development road”, has brought Türkiye to the core of an evolving Eurasia within the frame of a wider Black Sea basin encompassed in the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization.
Türkiye was the easternmost of the West in the Cold War geo-politics. As the republics of the South Caucasus and Central Asia became independent following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the eastern wing of Türkiye also became functional. On the one hand, as historical initiatives were taken to establish peace, stability and good neighborly relations in the South Caucasus, multi-dimensional relations with Central Asian Republic were institutionalized at an international level with the establishment of the “Organization of Turkic States”.
In the light of these developments, the candidacy of Türkiye for membership to the EU, still at the negotiation phase, has acquired new significance for both sides, necessitating the institutionalization of relations being conducted on a transactional basis of mutual interests.
Acknowledging Türkiye a nexus as well as a facilitator for integration between the East and the West with its two flanks, the Balkans and the Caucasus, our Center prepares a bilingual, Turkish and English, online “Daily Bulletin” five working days of the week to reflect the unique location and potential of Türkiye. Next to news items, it includes commentaries, analyses and research by our analysts, experts, scholars in residence as well as academic and student interns.
AVİM continues to publish uninterruptedly four periodical journals. “Ermeni Araştırmaları” in Turkish is published twice a year and has reached its 78th issue. “Review of Armenian Studies” is a distinct journal in English that also appears twice a year and has reached its 52nd issue. “International Crimes and History” is published annually with articles both in Turkish and English and has reached its 26th issue. These three are strictly academic with peer review. The fourth journal, “Eurasian World”, published twice a year, with articles in Turkish and English, has reached its 17th issue. Addressing the general public, it covers current political and economic issues and regional developments.
AVİM organizes numerous conferences on contemporary and regional issues. Monthly conferences are held on developments in Armenia and Armenian narrative under the heading “Ömer Engin Lütem Lectures” named in memory of the founder and later Honorary Chairman of AVİM. This year we have hosted eight distinguished speakers. Their presentations are compiled and published in book format at the end of each year. Book presentations and panel discussions with the participation of international partners, in collaboration with sponsoring institutions, are also among our activities. There are also partnership programs with think-tanks of the region with online discussions and exchange of views.
The Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM), an independent and non-profit think-tank has been carrying this voluminous work with the meticulous and often self-sacrificing work of a limited number of staff. AVİM staff deserves sincere thanks and warm congratulations for their unrelenting efforts, conscientious, creative and fruitful work. On behalf of AVİM, I would also like to express thanks and gratitude to all who have shown interest in and given support to our work and activities.
