Russia is viewing the preliminary agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia with cautious optimism, seeing it as a contribution to strengthening peace in the region, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said.

“We view the preliminary agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan with very cautious optimism. This is also an important contribution to strengthening peace in our greater Eurasian region,” he said during a session at the Eastern Economic Forum, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The preliminary agreement, signed on August 8, 2025, in Washington, D.C., under U.S. mediation, marks a historic step toward resolving the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The agreement, initialled by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, includes provisions for a ceasefire, diplomatic relations, and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor, dubbed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP).
